Mitigate Become less harsh or hostile.
Precursor An event that occurs before a natural hazard.
Seismometer An instrument to measure earthquakes.
Seismic Resistance Construction The fabrication of a building or structure that is able to withstand the sudden ground shaking.
Levees An embankment built to prevent the overflow of a river.
Mercalli Scale It is based on observable earthquake damage. (magnitude scale)
Enhanced Fujita Scale Used to assign a tornado a 'rating' based on estimated wind speeds and related damage.
Volcanic Explosive index A scale that describes the size of explosive volcanic eruptions based on magnitude and intensity.
Cone of Uncertainty Represents the probable track of the center of a tropical cyclone.
Saffir-Simpson Scale A Wind Scale that is a 1 to 5 rating based only on a hurricane's maximum sustained wind speed.
Monitoring Observe and check the progress or quality of (something) over a period of time; keep under systematic review.
Fault A crack in the earths crust.
Storm Surge An abnormal rise in seawater level during a storm, measured as the height of the water above the normal predicted astronomical tide.
Tectonic Plate Boundary A boundary between two or more plates.
Tectonic Plate A massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock
