Severity | Extent of damage, or loss from a natural hazard event. |
Mitigate | to make milder or softer, to moderate in force or intensity |
Precursor | An event that occurs before a natural hazard can help in predicting that the hazard event will occur. |
Monitoring | the act of observing something (and sometimes keeping a record of it) |
Seismometer | Instrument used to measure horizontal or vertical motion during an earthquake. |

Radar/Doplar | system that uses reflected radio waves to detect objects and measure their distance and speed |
Levees | Barriers composed of sediments made on either side of a river due to flooding. |
Seismic Resistance Construction | structures that are designed to protect buildings from hazards such as earthquakes. |
Mercalli Scale | A scale that rates earthquakes according to their intensity and how much damage they cause at a particular place |
Enhanced Fujita Scale | classifies the intensity of a tornado, based on wind speeds and specifically on the types of damage that occur |
Volcanic Explosive index | a scale for reporting the size of an explosive volcanic eruption |
