Tornado | A Mobile, destructive vortex of violently rotating winds having the appearance of a funnel-shaped cloud and advancing beneath a large storm system. |
Hurricane | A storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean. |
Volcanic Eruption | When gas and/or lava are released from a volcano—sometimes explosively. |
Flood | Occurs when an overflow of water submerges land that is usually dry. |
Natural Disaster | A natural event such as a flood, earthquake, or hurricane that causes great damage or loss of life. |
Forecast | A scientific claim about the likelihood that an event will occur in the future. |
Risk | The chance (probability) that a danger or hazard will occur. |
Natural Hazard Forecast | A scientific claim about the likelihood of a natural hazard event occurring in a particular place. |
Storm Surge | An abnormal rise in sea level along the coast caused by a storm. |
Monitoring | To make measurements and observations over time to keep track of something. |
Magnitude | A measurement of the energy or strength of a natural hazard event. Generally, the stronger the hazard, the greater its magnitude. |
Saffir-Simpson Scale | A system for classifying the intensity of a hurricane based on its wind speed. |
Severity | Extent of damage, or loss from a natural hazard event. |
Mitigate | Make less severe, serious, or painful. |
Tectonic Plate | A piece of Earth's crust. |
Fault | A fracture or zone of fractures between two blocks of rock. |
Tectonic Plate Boundary | The border between two plates. |
Convergent Boundary | Where two plates are moving toward each other. |
Divergent Boundary | Where two plates are moving away from each other and a new crust is forming from magma that rises to the Earth's surface. (Volcanoes) |
Transform Boundary | When two plates slide past each other in opposite directions. |
Precursor | An event that occurs before a natural hazard can help in predicting that the hazard event will occur. |
Seismometer | An instrument that measures and records details of earthquakes, such as force and duration. |
Earthquake | Sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action. |
