Levees a natural or artificial wall that blocks water from going where we don't want it to go
Weather Balloons They provide valuable input for computer forecast models, local data for meteorologists to make forecasts and predict storms, and data for research.
Radar radio location system that uses radio waves to determine the distance, angle, and radial velocity of objects relative to the site.
Saffir-Simpson Scale a scale from 1 to 5 rating based only on a hurricane's maximum sustained wind speed
Mercalli Scale The intensity scale consists of a series of certain key responses such as people awakening, movement of furniture, damage to chimneys, and finally - total destruction.
Enhanced Fujita Scale To make an estimate, damage has to occur to a structure, trees, powerlines, signs, or a number of damage indicators used by the National Weather Service. The scale goes from 0 (weak) to 5 (catastrophic).
Volcanic Explosive index a scale that describes the size of explosive volcanic eruptions based on magnitude and intensity. The numerical scale (from 0 to 8)
Cone of Uncertainty graphic depiction of the increasing accuracy that is possible for estimates as the details of a project become more known over time.
Storm Surge An abnormal rise in sea level along the coast caused by a storm.
Precursor An event that occurs before a natural hazard can help in predicting that the hazard event will occur.
Severity Extent of damage, or loss from a natural hazard event.
Magnitude A measurement of the energy or strength of a natural hazard event. Generally, the stronger the hazard, the greater its magnitude.
Saffir-Simpson Scale A system for classifying the intensity of a hurricane based on its wind speed.
Mitigate making the impacts of climate change less severe by preventing or reducing the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
Seismometer An instrument used to measure the shaking from an earthquake.
Monitoring Observation of a disease, condition or one or several medical parameters over time.
Doppler the apparent difference between the frequency at which sound or light waves leave a source and that at which they reach an observer, caused by relative motion of the observer and the wave source.
