Saffir-Simpson Scale A system for classifying the intensity of a hurricane based on wind speed.
Mitigate Steps taken to avoid or minimize negative environmental impacts
Storm Surge An abnormal rise in sea level along the coast caused by a storm.
Monitoring To make measurements and observations over time to keep track of something.
Seismometer An instrument used to measure the shaking from an earthquake.
Seismic Resistance Construction - The fabrication of a building or structure that is able to withstand the sudden ground shaking.
Levees A long ridge of sand, silt, and clay built up by a river along its banks, especially during floods.
Weather Balloons Balloon that carries instruments aloft to send back information on atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity and wind speed
Mercalli Scale Based on observable earthquake damage.
Enhanced Fujita Scale Used to assign a tornado a 'rating' based on estimated wind speeds and related damage.
Volcanic Explosive index A scale that describes the size of explosive volcanic eruptions based on magnitude and intensity.
Transform Boundary Moving next to each other.
Divergent Boundary Moving apart from each other.
Convergent Boundary Moving into eachother.
Cone of Uncertainty The visual picture of a hurricane forecast on a map.
