Types of IHEs
Term | Definition |
---|---|
UNIVERSITIES | An institution of higher education providing facilities for teaching and research and authorized to grant undergraduate and advanced academic degrees |
COLLEGES | An institution of higher education that is typically smaller and focused on undergraduate studies |
PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS | IHEs funded by the government and usually offer lower tuition than private IHEs, especially for residents of the state where the IHE is located |
PRIVATE INSTITUTIONS | IHEs that rely mainly on tuition, fees, and private sources of funding. |
JUNIOR or COMMUNITY COLLEGES | IHEs that provide two years of academic instruction beyond high school as well as technical and vocational training to prepare graduates for careers |
HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES or UNIVERSITIES (HBCU) | IHEs in the U.S. that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving African Americans |
HISPANIC SERVING INSTITUTIONS (HSI) | IHEs defined in the Higher Education Act as non-profit IHEs with a full-time undergraduate enrollment that is at least 25% Hispanic |
MILITARY SERVICE ACADEMIES | Federal academies for the undergraduate education and training of commissioned officers for the U.S. Armed Forces |
RELIGIOUSLY-AFFILIATED COLLEGES or UNIVERSITIES | IHEs that are connected to a religious faith; the ethics and belief system of the religion is built into available programs and student life |
SINGLE-GENDER COLLEGES | IHEs in which males or females attend school exclusively with members of their own gender |
FOR-PROFIT SCHOOLS | IHEs owned and operated by a private company or business often managed by stakeholders and investors |
ASIAN-AMERICAN and NATIVE AMERICAN PACIFIC ISLANDER SERVING INSTITUTIONS (AANAPISI) | IHEs that serve an undergraduate population that is both low-income AND in which AANAPI students make up at least 10% of the undergraduate population |
