World Bank | specialized agency of the United Nations that makes loans to countries for economic development, trade promotion, and debt consolidation |
International Monetary Fund | international organization with the goal of promoting cooperation and exchange between nations and to aid the growth of international trade |
Neoliberalism | strategy for economic development that calls for free markets and trade, balanced budgets, and minimal government intervention in the economy |
World Trade Organizations (WTO) | International body representing 149 countries; negotiates rules for global commerce and promotes free trade; meeting have been the sites for major anti-globalization protests. |
North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) | Free Trade Agreement between the United States, Canada, and Mexico |
Knowledge Economy | a society based primarily on the production of knowledge |
Informal Economy (shadow economy) | unofficial, unregulated, or untaxed economic activity |
One Child Family Policy (China) | policy of population control from 1980 till 2014; used financial incentive and penalties to promote birth control and abortions; effort to limit families to one child |
