Multiple meaning words | words with multiple meanings (bat) |
Synonyms | words with the same meanings (talk, speak) |
Antonyms | words with the opposite meanings (hot, cold) |
Homographs | words with the same spelling, but are pronounced differently (read, read; lead, lead) |
Homophones | words that sound the same, but are spelled differently, with different meanings (deer, dear) |
Prefixes | word parts added to the beginning of root words (un- in unhappy) |
Suffixes | word parts added to the end of root words (-ful in careful) |
Root words | the base word or the main word (taste in distasteful) |
Figurative language | a playful use of language used by writers to make their writing more interesting |
Sensory language | use of language that appeals to your senses (see, hear, feel, taste, smell) |
Alliteration | repetition of sounds in words (Simon Snake slithered silently down the sandy slope.) |
Onomatopoeias | sound words (pop, crack, bang) |
Personification | giving human characteristics to something that is not human (The wind sang us to sleep.) |
Simile | figurative language that compares things using "like" or "as" (She is as tall as a skyscraper) |
Metaphor | figurative language that is compares things (She is a nut) |
