What is the importance of folic acid? It reduces the chance of defects of the brain and spinal cord during development.
What is amniocentesis? The sampling of amniotic fluid using a hollow needle inserted into the uterus, to screen for developmental abnormalities in a fetus.
What is toxoplasmosis? Diseases transmitted through placenta, often contracted when pregnant mother handles cat feces or contaminated raw eggs and meat
What happens to a mother from 2-8 weeks? She will experience more nausea and vomiting.
What is ovulation? The ejection of a mature egg from the ovaries.
What is the embryo now considered at week 15? A fetus.
What food should you avoid during pregnancy? Deli meat.
How much does blood volume increase during pregnancy? 40-50%
When does a NT (Nuchal Scan) occur? 14 weeks
What should be done between 18-22 weeks during pregnancy? A mid-pregnancy ultrasound.
What is vernix? A substance that covers the skin of a baby, protecting the skin.
What weeks is the midpoint of pregnancy? The 20th week.
What week does real hair start to grow on the fetus? Week 24.
What three tests are conducted in the 2nd trimester? A blood pressure test, fetal movement test, and a ultrasound.
What week are the bones developed, but are still soft/malleable? Week 29.
When the nervous system has matured, what function does it control? It controls the body temperature of the fetus.
At what week is a fetus considered full term? 39 weeks.
What is the most common reason for overdue pregnancy? A male baby.
What is dilation? The opening of the cervix.
What are Braxton Hicks contractions? Sporadic uterine contractions.
What are contractions? The tightening and relaxing of the uterus.

When is a epidural given? The dilation stage.
When (what stage) is the crowning of the baby? The expulsion stage.
What is the placental stage? The expulsion of the placenta.
When should a mother NOT receive a C-section? When contractions are two minutes apart.
What score is given to a baby whose heart rate is 110 according to the Apgar scale? 0, Impaired functions 1, Reduced functions 2, Normal functions 2.
