What does the word "SHIATSU" translate to mean? Finger Pressure
Define Ki : Vital Energy
Define Tsubo : Points where Ki comes to the surface of the body. (pressure pts, trigger pts, or acupoints) located on the meridian.
Define Jitsu : When a person has an EXCESS amount of energy.
Define Kyo : When a person has a LACK of energy.
List 3 symptoms of Jitsu : Stiffness, Fullness, Activity
List 3 symptoms of Kyo : Weakness, Emptiness, Inactivity
Define Hara : Center of gravity & breathing; Dwelling place of inner being.
What is Hara Diagnosis ? Assessment of the flow of QI through the meridian pathways. Done by touching the abdomen & feeling zones that are associated with the different meridians. NOT a medical diagnosis. Not a suggestion of disease, only disharmony.
Tao Shiatsu -Developed by Ryokyu Endo, Japan Involves the new 5 elements;(Ki training, Ki method, Super vessels, Super vessel tsubo's, 24 meridians) and new methodology of treatment. Will help to release toxins & rebalance the client.

Barefoot Shiatsu, developed by Suzuki Yamamoto ; also known as ? Ashiatsu
Define 5 Element Shiatsu, Developed by Cindy Banker & Robin Fian. This technique assesses the disharmony of the client. The practitioner uses the 5 Element theory to decide what would help with balance.
Define Macrobiotic Shiatsu, Developed by Shizuko Yamamoto. A practitioner will look at how each individual is connected with nature. Uses visual, verbal, and touch technique. Treatment includes dietary guidance, breathing technique, and corrective exercises.
Define Ohashiatsu, Developed by Wataru Ohashi. This technique is based on nurturing/healing touch by the practitioner from Eastern philosophies. Method deals with inner self-healing through meditation & exercises.
Define Shiatsu Anma (Anmo) TCM & contemporary pressure pts on the client. This technique emphasizes the neuron-musculoskeletal system & abdominal massage.
Define Zen Shiatsu, Developed by Shizuto Masunaga. Shiatsu, Psychology, and Western philosophy are combined to create this gentle technique. Incorporates meridians, stretching, & joint rotation to increase flexibility. (specific, individualized for each client)
Define Quantum Shiatsu, Developed by Pauline Sasaki. This explores Physics & energetic bodywork that goes beyond space/time. She views the human as part of the universal energy!
Integrative Eclectic Shiatsu, Developed by Toshiko Phipps. Technique uses Shiatsu, Chinese theory, and Western massage soft tissue methods.
Namikoshi Shiatsu, Developed by Tokujiro Namikoshi. Based on Western Anatomy/Physiology. The practitioner applies pressure to specific points. Involves a whole body session.

Some Contraindications of Shiatsu include : 1)Contagious illness/skin condition 2)Cancer 3)Fever 4)High Blood Pressure 5)1st Trimester pregnancy 6) Client or Practitioner has just eaten a large meal.
