Middle America Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Slash and Burn Agriculture Trees are cut down and then soil burned to enrich it
Plot Small area of fertile land used for farming.
Quetzal A tropical bird whose feathers were valued by the Mayans.
Hieroglyphic A symbol based upon a picture that stands for a word, idea or sound.
Observatories A building for observing the moon, and other objects in the sky
Basin A bowl shaped area that had some of the best farmland in the highlands of Mexico because of its volcanic soil.
Chinampa Artificial islands that created more land for farming.
Dike A wall that holds back water, like a dam.The Aztecs built this one to hold back the salt water from the fresh water in Lake Texcoco.
Rigid Unchanging, fixed.
Aqueducts Canals or pipes that carry fresh water from the surrounding hills.
