5.7 Matter

TermDefinition
Atoms are the smallest part of an element.
Elements are matter composed of all the same type of atom. There are more than 100 that make up all matter. They are grouped as the Periodic Table of Matter.
Compounds are the result of two or more elements combined chemically. they are composed of molecules.
Matter is made up of small particles called atoms. The basic structural components of an atom are electrons, protons, and neutrons.
electrons negative charged particles
neutrons neutral charged particles
protons positive charged particles
Molecules are the smallest part of a compound.
Mixture are combinations of two or more substances that do not lose their identifying characteristics when combined.
Solution is a type of mixture in which a solid material, such as salt, is dissolved in a liquid, such as water.
Properties are characteristics that describe an object.
Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness measured on a definite scale.
Mass is the metric measure of the amount of matter in an object.
solid is the state of matter that has a definite shape and a definite volume. This kind of molecules are densely packed.
liquid is the state of matter that has a indefinite shape and a definite volume. This kind of molecules flow easily.
gas is the state of matter that has a indefinite shape and a indefinite volume. This kind of molecules bounces around.
melting when thermal energy is increased the phase of matter moves from a solid to liquid
evaporating when thermal energy is increased the phase of matter moves from a liquid to gas
condensing when thermal energy is decreased the phase of matter moves from a gas to the liquid
freezing when thermal energy is decreased the phase of matter moves from a liquid to the solid

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
