Friars | People who belonged to religious orders but lived and worked among the general public |

Black Death | A deadly plague that swept through Europe between 1347 and 1351 |
Charlemagne | Crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire |
France | Country named for the Frankish people who conquered Gaul |
Byzantium Empire | A medieval empire that was a continuation of the original Rome Empire |
Vikings | Raiders from Scandinavia who plundered the coasts of Europe |
Islam | The religion the Eastern Christians fought for the Holy Land |
Israel | The modern country of the Holy Land |
