Medieval Another name for the Middle Ages
Monks Religious men who lived apart from society in isolated communities
Monasteries Communities of Monks
Vassal A knight who promised to support a lord in exchange for land
Feudalism A system of promises that governed the relationships between lords and vassals
Manor A large estate owned by a knight or lord
Serfs Workers who were tied to the land on which they lived
Crusades A long series of wars between Christians and Muslims in Southwest Asia
Clergy Church officials
Friars People who belonged to religious orders but lived and worked among the general public
Magna Carta A document listing rights that the king could not ignore and was written in England
Black Death A deadly plague that swept through Europe between 1347 and 1351
Charlemagne Crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire
France Country named for the Frankish people who conquered Gaul
Byzantium Empire A medieval empire that was a continuation of the original Rome Empire
Vikings Raiders from Scandinavia who plundered the coasts of Europe
Islam The religion the Eastern Christians fought for the Holy Land
Israel The modern country of the Holy Land
Ring Around the Rosie The children's game that came from the period of the Black Death
