Imperialism | Domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another nation or region |
Sphere of Influence | Ares in which an outside power claims exclusive privilege |
Nationalism | Strong feelings of pride in or devotion to one country |
Protectorate | Country with its own government but under the control of an outside military |
Social Darwinism | Philosophy that nation compete for survival and that superior countries perspiring while inferior countries suffer and perish |
Indigenous | The original or natives to a country or region |
Missionaries | A person sent on a religious mission, especially one sent to promote christianity in a foreign country |
Boxer Rebellion | A Chinese movement that attempted to excel all foreigners from China |
Opium War | Conflict between Britain and China which resulted in the downfall of the Qing Dynasty |
Homogeneous Society | A society that has a common culture heritage and language |
Matthew Perry | U.S Naval commander who successfully opened up Japan to outside influences |
Monroe Doctrine | Proclamation that made the U.S the primary influence in the Americas |
Westernization | The adoption of western ideas, technology and culture |
Annex | To add a territory out of an existing nation |
Trade Surplus | Economic situation in which a country exports more than it imports |
Ethnocentrism | The belief that ones own culture is superior over all other cultures |
Colonialism | The policy or practice of acquiring full or political control over another country, occupying it with settlers, and benefiting from it economically |
Paternalism | The policy or practice on the part of people in positions of authority of restricting the freedom and responsibilities of those inferior underlings to them, for (in) the subordinates supposed best interest |
Subjugation | The action of bringing someone or something under domination or control |
Economic Market | Ares for money making from the purchase and sale of provision, livestock, ad other commodities |
Exploitation | The action or face of treating someone unfairly in order to benefit from their work |
Predator | A person or group that ruthlessly exploits others |
Prey | A person, group or country that is helpless and unable to escape attack : victim |
