Totalitarian state | a one-party state in which the government regulates all aspects of life |
Command economy | production, investment, prices, and incomes are determined centrally by a government. |
Collectivization (collectives) | the Soviet Union´s practice of taking local landowners' land and using it to create a single massive working site |
Kulak | semi-wealthy farm owners |
Dekulakization | the event in which the USSR sought to remove the group of semi-wealthy farm owners when they refused to give up land for collectivization |
Gulag | labor camps where Russian criminals and anti-revolutionaries were sent |
Russification | The idea of Russia being a monolith culture, with only Russian spoken |
Socialist Realism | The regulation of art to be made into USSR propaganda |
The Red Scare | Western countries experienced this as Russia tried to share communism to other places, bringing on an onslaught of propaganda and anti-communist actions. |

The Ukraine Famine | A manmade starvation where Stalin forced Ukrainian farmers to give up a large percent of their grain for Russia and countries buying from Russia, in the middle of a bad harvest. |
The Great Purge and Show Trials | A major time of execution and imprisonment for Lenin's Bolsheviks, "unloyal" military leaders, suspected anti-revolutionaries, and inadequate production managers. The accused would be threatened, tortured and forced to confess to various crimes |
Methods of control and terror (religion, arts, propaganda, etc) | regulating art, having secret police, propaganda, harsh punishments for criticism |
Why were the methods of control necessary? | So the Russian people would be focused on worshipping and contributing to the USSR rather than anything they deemed more important. |
How did citizens view Stalin’s rule? | Some genuinely endorsed Stalin and his actions, others openly detested them, and yet others secretly went against his rule. But most were in denial over Stalin's actions. |
Benefits | Free education, free healthcare, women have jobs and education, and inexpensive housing |
Drawbacks | small and crowded housing, famine with little meat and fruit, and restricted freedom |
Overall results of communism | This belief was ultimately unsuccessful in Russia, as a poor and elite class did form. |
How did the world view Stalin and the USSR? | Many countries, especially western countries were afraid of their own people becoming communist. Some people did indeed endorse communism and saw benefits, while others also disliked communism. |
