oasis | a small area in the desert watered by springs and wells |
nomad | a member of a group that moves from place to place in search of food, water, and grazing land for their herds |
tribe | any system of social organization made up of villages, bands or other groups with a common ancestry |
idol | an image used as an object of worship |
pilgrimage | a journey to a sacred place or shrine |
Qur'an | the sacred book of Islam |
monotheism | the belief that there is only one God |
Islam | a religion based on the teachings of the prophet Muhammad |
Muslim | a believer in Islam |
mosque | a Muslim house of worship |
Sunna | traditional Islamic conduct observed by orthodox Muslims, based on the example of Muhammad |
boycott | a refusal to do business with an organization or group |
Muhammad | a man born around 570 C.E. who taught the faith of Islam |
polytheism | belief in more than one god |
prophet | a person who speaks or interprets the words of God |
Five Pillars of Islam | the most basic acts of worship for Muslims: declaration of faith, prayer, charity, fasting, and making a pilgrimage to Mecca |
Ramadan | the ninth month of the Islamic calendar during which Muslims are required to fast |
cultural diffusion | the spread of cultural elements from one society to another |
innovation | something new; an improvement |
Shahadah | declaration of faith |
Salat | daily ritual prayer |
Zakat | charity |
Siyam | fasting |
Hajj | the pilgrimage to Mecca |
