Industrial revolution the transition from creating goods by hand to using machines
Steam engine coal fired machine that provided almost limitless power beyond natural resources
Middle class Social class composed of small businessmen, doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers, and other professionals required for industrial society
Ideology of Domesticity Idea that women were for home making/chores while men worked jobs
Laboring class Working in factories or as a wage laborer, the pay allows one to survive but not much else
Karl Marx founder of modern communism
Labor party A political party formed to represent the interests of ordinary working people
Proletariat Marx's term for the mass of workers
Russian revolution 1905 Granted a constitution, legalized both trade unions and political parties, permitted election of national assembly
Caudillos Independent leaders who dominated local areas by force in defiance of national policies
Mexican revolution Armed rebellion in which the Mexican people fought for political and social reform
Second industrial revolution Steel, chemicals, electricity in the 1860's
Labor unions an organized group of workers formed to protect and further their rights
Transnational Business Business organizations that operate internationally with production facilities in more than one country
United fruit company U.S. corporation that controlled the banana trade in much of Latin America
Adam smith scottish economist who wrote the Wealth of Nations a precursor to modern Capitalism
John Stuart Mill English philosopher and economist remembered for his interpretations of empiricism (learning from experience) and utilitarianism(right from wrong based on outcome)
Classical Liberalism philosophy of protection of individual rights and liberties by limiting government power
Laissez-faire capitalism an economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately owned and operated for profit with minimal or no government interference
Export economy most goods are produced for export rather than for domestic use
Industrial economy most goods are made by machines and in factories
