Political Processes

nationalism a nation's desire to create and maintain its own state
centripetal force forces that unite the people within a country
centrifrugal force forces that divides people within a country
imperialism a broader concept that encompasses all the ways to influence other countries (colonialism, neocolonialism, etc.)
colonialism a type of imperialism that involves people settling onto the land of another country
Berlin Conference the conference that divided Africa into states with little to no regard of the existing cultural and political boundaries
self-determination the right to choose their own sovereign government w/o external influence
decolonization the undoing of colonization (freeing a state)
genocide an organized mass killing directed at a certain ethnic group
Cold War a period of diplomatic, political, and military rivalry b/w the U.S. and the Soviet Union
satellite states a state dominated by another state politically or economically
devolution the process in which one or more regions are given more autonomy from a central unit of government
