QuestionAnswer
Scale of Analysis Looking at data (information) on a map from a local, national, regional or global perspective. Changing the scale of analysis allows for a more complex understanding of the data and the people that occupy an area.
Geographic Information systems (GIS) Stores, organizes, and displays geographic data that can then be used to configure both simple and complex maps.
Region An area of Earth's surface with certain characteristics that make it distinct from other areas.
Formal Region A well defined area that has one or more shared traits.
Functional Region (Nodal) An area organized and united by its function around a focal point (node), or the center of an interest or activity.
Perceptual (Vernacular) Region A region that is defined by people's feelings and attitudes about a place.
Remote sensing Collecting data without making physical contact.
Quantitative Data Information and data measured by numbers. Completely objective.
Qualitative Data Data that is collected by using field observations, media reports, travel narratives, or personal interviews.
Global Positioning System (GPS) A system that determines the precise position of something on Earth through a series of satellites, tracking stations, and receivers.
Sustainability The use of Earth's land and natural resources in ways that ensure they will continue to be available in the future.
Natural Resources Materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain.
Land Use How humans use and legally define land. Represents the economic and cultural activities (e.g., agricultural, residential, industrial, mining, and recreational uses) that are practiced at a given place.
Environmental Determinism The theory that human behavior is largely controlled by the physical environment.
Possibilism The theory that the physical environment may set limits on human actions, but people have the ability to adjust to the physical environment and choose a course of action from many alternatives.
