How did the Germanic Invasions affect the western half of the Roman Empire? The constant warfare caused a series of changes that altered the economy, government, and culture. This included the disruption of trade, downfall of cities, and population shifts.
Why was there a loss of the common language? The Germanic tribes that attacked Rome could not read or write Greek/Latin and had no use for Greek and Roman culture or knowledge. Due to this, there was no need for the language to continue to be taught.
What changed about the government once the Germanic peoples began to take control? The Germanic peoples lived in small communities that were governed by unwritten rules and traditions. The people considered it a disgrace to outlive their chief, however personal loyalty outlawed all others.
What were monasteries and what did they do? Monasteries, or monks, were men that gave up their private possessions and devoted their lives to serving God. Monks Christianized countries and peoples, and participated in charitable activities like nursing the sick,and assisting the poor.
Who was Charlemagne? Charlemagne was an imposing figure who ruled the Frankish kingdom once his father Pepin the Short died in 768. Charlemagne built an empire greater than any known since ancient Rome and became the most powerful king in western Europe.
What were the highest and lowest social class structure status' in Medieval Times? The highest social class structure status was a Monarch, or king in other words. The lowest social class structure status was a serf, or peasant.
What did feudalism create in the Middle Ages? Feudalism created a structure and order within the society. Feudalism was a system of loyalties and protections based on mutual obligations.
What was a manor? The manor was an economic system of feudalism. The king, lords, and vassals would give land to the serfs to live on so that the serfs would provide food for the manor/kingdom. In return peasants (serfs) would pay taxes for knights to protect them.
What did serfs (peasants) have to endure in the manor lifestyle? Manor life was very harsh on the serfs. Some reasons why are because they had to pay high priced taxes, live in crowded houses, work at all times, and eat a diet that only consisted of vegetables, coarse brown bread, grain, cheese, and soup.
How did one get separated into a social class? Social status' was most often inherited from generations before. Most citizens were serfs, or peasants, that produced labor for whomever had power over them, most likely a lord.
What were the three steps of becoming a knight? The first step was becoming a page at the age of 7, which means learning the basics of manners and fighting skills. The second step was being a squire at the age of 14, which entails training and taking tests. The last step is becoming an actual knight.
What was chivalry? And by what value were knights supposed to live by? Chivalry was a code of conduct for knights. Being a knight consisted of living by the values of bravery, honesty, respect, loyalty, and compassion.
What was a woman's role in the feudal society? Women in the feudal society had very little power and were taught that they were inferior to men. Noblewomen were limited however not completely powerless. Peasant women on the other hand held no power at all and struggled to survive.
What did knighthood entail? Knighthood was similar to the different stages in an educational career, such as, elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. Overall, when one finishes knighthood, they devote much of their time to improving their fighting skills.
What were some literary examples about chivalry written in medieval times? Literature about knights didn't reflect reality, however there were many different types of it throughout the years. Some were songs, poems, and epics.
Why for most of the Middle Ages was the Church the most dominant institution? The Church was dominant because they were the only educated people that were taught Greek and Roman knowledge. They were also the only people who could read and write Latin and Greek in the Medieval Society.
How were the Germanic tribes united? The Germanic tribes were united by the beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church and Christianity.
What was the power struggle between the pope/church and king/monarch? For most of the Middle Ages, the Pope/church had more power than the King/monarch. To interfere with the King's power, the church/Pope tried to influence and control secular/worldly issues within a kingdom.
What happened if a person went against, questioned, or challenged the church's teachings? If a person went against, questioned, or challenged the church, the church would deny the person from going to church, receiving sacraments, being given a proper burial, and worst punishment of all, condemning their soul/entrance into heaven.
What was the ceremony in which kings and nobles appointed church officials? The ceremony where kings and nobles appointed church officials was called lay investiture. Kings and nobles tried to influence and control church affairs/issues by doing so.
