AP Pysch Memory Terms

Retroactive interference When new learning disrupts your recall of old information
Retrograde amnesia An inability to retrieve old memories
Explicit memory Memories of facts and life experiences
Misinformation effect When misleading information distorts one's memory of an event
Episodic memory Memories of life experiences
Effortful processing The type of processing used with explicit memories
Serial position effect The tendency to best recall the first and last items in a list
Implicit memory Memories of learned skills or classically conditioned associations
Automatic processing The type of processing used with implicit memories
Positive transfer When previous learning helps with new learning
Anterograde amnesia An inability to form new memories
Recency effect Improved recall of the last items in a list
Testing effect Enhanced memory after retrieving, rather than simply re-reading information
Basil ganglia The part of the brain that processes procedural memories
Prefrontal cortex The part of the brain that processes working memory
Storage decay When memories fade over time due to non-use
Maintenance rehearsal This type of rehearsal is used for shallow processing
Hippocampus The part of the brain that consolidates long-term explicit memories
Semantic memory Memories of facts and knowledge
Spacing effect The tendency for learning to be more effective when study sessions are spaced out
Procedural memory Memories of automatic skills/how to do something
Ebbinghaus' forgetting curve State the process of forgetting is initially rapid, but levels off over time
Primacy effect Improved recall of the first items in a list
Proactive interference When prior learning disrupts your recall of new information
Source amnesia Faulty memory of how, when, or where information was learned
Elaborative rehearsal This type of rehearsal is used for deep processing
