Opium Wars Series of wars between the Qing Dynasty of China and Great Britain over Britain’s forceful trade of an addictive drug in China. Resulted in China signing an unequal treaty
Extraterritoriality State of being exempt from local laws
Imperialism The domination by one country of the political, economic, and/or cultural life of another country or region. Also known as colonialism or colonization
Cecil Rhodes British imperialist who wanted to create a “Cape to Cairo” railroad to connect Great Britain's territories in Africa
Scramble for Africa Invasion and colonization of African territory by European powers between 1881 and 1914
Social Darwinism The theory that individuals, groups, and peoples are subject to the same laws of natural selection as plants and animals. Was used to justify political conservatism, imperialism, and racism, and to discourage intervention and reform
British East India Company A joint-stock company that was given a royal charter in 1600 to explore and trade in India and other surrounding areas. Later would directly control India on behalf of Great Britain
King Leopold Belgian ruler who imperialized the Congo and treated rubber latex workers with oppressive and harsh methods
Colonies Countries or regions controlled by another country
Boxer Rebellion Anti-imperialist and anti-foreigner uprising in China towards the end of the Qing Dynasty, which ended after foreign interference
Treaty of Nanjing Unequal treaty that was signed at the end of the Opium Wars which forced China to give Hong Kong to Great Britain and to trade exclusively with Great Britain
White Man’s Burden Popular idea coined in an 1899 poem by Rudyard Kipling that Europeans and people of European descent (like Americans) had the responsibility to bring their culture to other parts of the world to “civilize” them
Nationalism Strong feelings of pride in one’s country
Boer Wars Conflicts between Great Britain and the descendants of Dutch settlers in Cape Colony in South Africa over control of valuable lands in South Africa, which the British won
Black Man’s Burden Response written by Edmund Morel to Rudyard Kipling’s poem, to show an alternative view of imperialism
Qing Dynasty Last imperial dynasty of China, which ruled from 1644 to 1912
Spheres of Influence Region over which a state or organization has a level of cultural, economic, military, or political exclusivity
1913 Native’s Land Act First legislation of discrimination and segregation passed by the British in regards to Southern Africa
Sepoy Rebellion Revolt of soldiers employed by the British East India Company against the company which was unsuccessful
