Dr. David Livingstone British explorer in Africa in 1841 as an old medical missionary. He spent 30 years in central africa trekking through uncharted regions of the dense jungles. Made detailed notes about his discoveries and sent the info back to London whenever he could.
Henry Stanley after dr. After Livingstone's death in 1873, he would continue his work in central africa. Explored in central africa.
King Leopold II Belgium king. ordered all indigenous people surrender to colonial rule or be killed.
Boers afrikaners, descendants of the original Dutch settlers - occupied cape town and surrounding areas since the 17th century. Formed two independent republics.
Cecil Rhodes mined for gold and diamonds in south africa, and his goal was to paint as much of africa with british red as possible. He also wanted to create a series of British colonies linked by railroads. Supported raids meant to spark uprisings against Boers.

What was the Great Trek? the boers moving for the coastal lands northward during the 1830s
How did the Boers treat indigenous people? Why? they denied indigenous people a place in society and treated them as nothing more than laborers, because they believed that they had white superiority

What strategies did the Boers use against the British? guerilla warfare
What strategies did the British use against the Boers? total war (scorched earth)
Who won the Boer Wars and created an independent Union of South Africa? the british emerged victorious and created an independent union of the south Africa's combined with the old cape colony and the boers republics
How did the British appease the Boers after the Boer Wars? they said that only white people could vote in elections
What were the only 2 free states in Africa by 1914? liberia and ethiopia
What were some problems with indirect rule by European countries? they kept the old african elitism power which established class and ethnic tensions
Are there any similarities between the rise of nationalism in Africa and the rise of nationalism in Southeast Asia? they both educated their next generations in western schools, and when these people became leaders they realised that the western rules that were put into place were unfair and they wanted equality and political freedom for their people
What “gap” was present between theory and practice in colonial policy? the people realised that the european countries did not apply democratic values throughout africa, such as indigenous people could only have low-paying jobs, they had their farms taken over, and some of them lost their right to mine their own resources
