Mechanism of action (MOA) Interefere with PABA and folic acid formation and thus destroy bacteria
Common indications Urinary tract infections, otitis media, ulcerative colitis, lower respiratory infections
Adverse reactions Photosensitivity resulting in rashes or sunburns, nausea and vomiting, jaundice, blood complications, kidney damage
Special considerations Avoiding direct sunlight or use sunscreens when expose. Drink plenty of water to prevent crystallization in the urine. Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole infusions need to be stored at room temperature.
