Term | Definition |

Brinkmanship | pushing a dangerous situation to the verge of disaster in order to achieve the most advantageous outcome and make the opposing party back down. |
Cold War | Political, economic, and social struggle between U.S and the Soviet Union - no actual fighting |
Communism | a political ideology that focuses on collective ideas such as total public property, the common good coming before individual desires, and people being paid based on what they need. |
Containment | United States policy using military, economic, and political strategies to slow or stop the spread of Communism. This was used to prevent a domino effect and to stop the Soviet Union from getting a bigger sphere of influence. |
Cuban Missile Crisis | After Cuba became Communist the Soviet Union decided to place some missiles on the island and had them face the United States. Not liking this, the U.S. decided to get their own missiles ready, then both sides got closer to launching at each other. |
Detente | to relax and cool down after intense situations. |
Deterrence | used during cold war - discourage opposing party from making certain choices through fear of the consequences. |
Korean War | A civil war between North and South Korea from 1950-1953. The Soviet Union gave money and military supplies to support the North (communists) and the United States gave money and military supplies to support the South (Liberal) |
Liberalism | a political ideology that focuses on individualist ideas such as individual rights and freedoms, private ownership, and democracy. |
Iron Curtain | A symbolic border between the Soviet Union sphere of influence in Eastern Europe and the United States sphere of influence in Western Europe |
Sphere of Influence | an area (can be a country or nation) where another country has power to change the government |
Truman Doctrine | 1947, President Truman's policy of providing economic and military aid to any country threatened by communism or who wanted to become liberal, mainly helped Greece and Turkey |
Arms Race | The race between the Soviet Union and the US to each have the biggest and best weapons. This created a massive pile of unused bombs. |
Domino Effect | The fear that if one country became Communist that the countries around it would also become Communist and the countries around those would also become Communist (a domino effect) |
