Latin America Qs

QuestionAnswer
What caused the creoles in South America to rebel against Spain? Creoles wanted equal power with the Peninsulares and political and economic control.
Why did the experience of Brazilians differ from other Latin Americans in their quest for independence? It was peaceful, no fighting. The king allowed his son's colony to have independence so that his other son could take over Portugal when he died.
Why did the experience of Mexicans differ from other Latin Americans in their quest for independence. Mexico's revolution was led by mestizos and Indians instead of the creoles. It started from peasants and not with people with a relatively high social status.
Why was there very little significant economic or social change for most people in Latin America after independence? Creole leaders didn't share freedom with most others (peasants/slaves). Political and economic power still stayed with the small group of landowners.
Why did the United States intervene in Latin American politics in the 19th centuries? Because of economic interests and ideological reasons.
How did the Spanish originally classify people and why did this fail? The Spanish classified people by the race of their ancestors. This failed because most people didn't have proper documents of their ancestry line, so it was impossible to be precise.
North American view of race vs Caribbean view of race NA -> binary view of race, Caribbean ->mostly men->mixed race kids->broader view of color
Why didn't Latin America develop factories? Because they imported Europeans and North American manufactured goods, so they didn't need to
Why did wealth inequality increase after LA's independence? As workers went into debt, landowners became wealthier since the government took over native peoples' land and sold them to the already wealthy landowners
What economic problems did LA have after independence? Widespread poverty and dependence on industrialized colonies
What social problems did LA have after independence? Most people were incredibly poor and didn't have time to improve their lives, community, or human rights.
What political problems did LA have after independence? Most people didn't have a vote or anyone who represented their concerns in the gov't. Creoles (people in power) didn't know how to run a democracy. Caudillos took over and stole money from taxes, etc.
