coordination the act of joining two independent clauses in one of three ways 1. Semicolon (;) 2. Semicolon + conjunctive adverb + comma 3. Comma + coordinate conjunction
verbal phrase a group of words with a verbal: infinitive, gerund, or participle
run-on sentence the error of joining more than two independent clauses with and or but
fused sentence the error of joining two independent clauses with nothing at all
comma splice the error of joining two independent clauses with only a comma
fragment a group of words that does not express a complete thought
compound complex sentence a sentence which contains two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses
simple sentence a sentence which contains one independent clause
independent clause a group of words with a subject and verb that can stand alone as a sentence.
dependent clause a group of words without a subject and a verb that cannot stand alone as a sentence; it must have an independent clause
