What was the Holocaust? The killing of 6 million Jews by Nazi Germany during WWII
Why did the Ottoman Empire break up after WWI? They were on the losing side of the war.
What country was given a mandate to control the area known as Palestine when the the Ottoman Empire was dismantled after WWI? Britain
What is a mandate? Control over an area, similar to a colony
How did Arabs living in Palestine feel about the creation of Israel? They believed it was unfair to them because the land really belonged to them.
Why has there been so much conflict among countries in the Middle East since the break up of the Ottoman Empire? The new country boundaries were created by European countries without regard to the nationalist feelings of the religious and ethnic groups living there. Some groups were thrown together and others were separated.
Why did so many people around the world believe that Jews should be given their own country after WWII? Because of their suffering during the Holocaust. The Holocaust also caused Zionism to gain popularity.
Who partitioned (divided) the Middle East after WWI? Britian and France
What secret agreement was used to partition (divide up) the Middle East after WWI? The Sykes/Picot Agreement.
What is Zionism? A movement for the establishment of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
Which side of the war did the Ottoman Empire join? The Central Powers
Who were the victors in WWI? The Allied Powers (Britain, France, ..)
How did the Palestinian Arabs feel about the creation of Israel? They refused to acknowledge Israel as a country.
After Israel declared its independence in 1948, who joined with Palestinian Arabs to try to stop the creation of this new state by immediately attacking the new state? Neighboring Arab countries

Why did the Jewish people claim the land should belong to them? They claimed historical ties to the land; It was given to them by God more than 4000 yrs ago, They were forced out of their land by the Romans.
Why do the Sunni and Shia Muslims not get along? They have different views on who should lead the Islamic countries.
What was the original United Nations plan for partitioning the area of Palestine in 1948? To divide the area into separate Arab and Jewish states (Palestine and Israel). However, the Jews accepted the plan and the Arabs in Palestine did not.
What are some characteristics of the Christian belief? Bible is holy text, Church is a place of worship, Jesus is the founder, Jerusalem is a holy city
What are some characteristics of Judaism? The Torah is the sacred text, The Torah contains the law of God, known as the 10 commandments, Yom Kipper, Passover and Hanukah are some of the holidays, Abraham is their founder.
What are some characteristics of Islam? The Qu'ran is the sacred text. Mohammad is their founder, The 5 Pillars of faith are found in Qu'ran, Mecca is their holiest cities.
