Foundation to Ethnic Studies

Sociology the study of development, structure, and functioning of a human society
Critical Theory a philosophy that involves being critical of the prevailing view of society
Race Refers to physical differences that groups and cultures consider socially significant
Ethnicity Refers to shared culture, such as language, ancestry, practices, and beliefs
Nationality Refers to the country of citizenship
Class a group of people within a society who possess the same socioeconomic status (power, status and wealth)
Privilege a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group.
Marginalization treated like “less than” or ignored; to relegate to an unimportant or powerless position within a society or group
Hegemony the power one social group wields among the rest.

Microaggressions a statement, action, or incident regarded as an instance of indirect, subtle, or unintentional discrimination against members of a marginalized group such as a racial or ethnic minority.
Sex Refers to a set of biological attributes in humans and animals.
Gender Refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, expressions and identities of girls, women, boys, men, and gender diverse people.
