Mayflower Compact First time a free people had made self-government
Lords Proprietors 8 men who granted the Carolinas by Charles II
Bicameral 2 house legislature, in SC it was Commons House of Assembly and the Council.
Anthony Ashley Cooper Most active proprietor and biggest influence on SC's development, Ashley and Cooper rivers named after him.
Barbadians From Barbados, made up a good portion of SC's early settlers.
Cash Crops Crops planted for profit, rice and indigo in SC.
Carolina Gold Nickname for rice in SC, made SC wealthy.
Jamestown First permanent English colony in America.
New England Colonies Had high literacy rate and town meetings.
NC and SC Split Two colonies were divided b/c of differences in economy and geography.
Proprietary A colony owned and governed by a person or group of people
Seven Years War Known as French and Indian War in the colonies. Led to anger against Britain in the colonies b/c colonist could not settle on land Britain won.
Royal A colony governed directly by the king.
The Yamasee War Yamassee attacked plantations near Port Royal. Proprietors didn't help at all.
Headright System Allowed white men to gain land and vote in the Carolinas.
Slave Code of 1740 Result of the Stono Rebellion, further restricted slaves.
Plantation Systems Used task system or gang system of slavery.
Indigo Plant used to make purple/blue dye, SC's 2nd largest export during this time.
Cattle and Hogs Early attempt at making a profit from the Carolinas. Lots of land and low upkeep made it easy.
Tobacco Cash crop that saved Jamestown.
House of Burgesses First elected group of lawmakers in British North America.
Georgia Created as a buffer between Spanish Florida and SC.
Pennsylvania Founded by William Penn, refuge for Quakers that practiced tolerance.
Massachusetts Bay Colony Founded by Puritans who wanted religious freedom but were not tolerant towards other religious views
Stono Rebellion Largest slave rebellion in British NA
Slave Code of 1740 Slaves could not assemble w/out white supervision, learn to read, and could be arrested by any white person.
Indentured Servants Worked for 4 to 10 years, Jamestown used them to pick cash crops at first but switched to slaves.
William Penn Influential Quaker who founded Pennsylvania
Charles Town The capital of SC and biggest southern port city.
Native American Trade Helped SC survive as a colony, Europeans traded guns, knives, cloth, etc. for animal furs and skins.
Religious Freedom Drew many settlers to SC and made it a tolerant colony.
Goose Creek Men One faction that developed in SC's colonial government, they opposed the proprietors.
Maryland Founded as a refuge for Catholics
Dissenters Disagreed with the Church of England and also opposed the Goose Creek Men in SC's government.
