Topic 2
Solids liquids and gases
Question | Answer |
---|---|
What is a crystalline solid? | A solid with particles that form a pattern and melt at a particular temperature |
What is an amorphous solid? | A solid that gets softer as it is heated and doesn't melt at a particular temperature |
Do liquids with a high viscosity flow slowly or quickly? | slowly, for example honey |
Do liquids with a low viscosity flow slowly or quickly? | quickly, for example water |
How are the particles in an amorphous solid arranged? | in no regular pattern |
What is surface tension? | An inward force or pull among molecules in a liquid that bring the molecules on the surface closer together |
What affect does pressure have on a liquids boiling point? | It requires a higher temperature to boil, the temperature of the liquid will remain constant while it boils |
Why is it that with gases like helium and oxygen you can put a large volume in a small tank? | Because gases can be compressed |
What is vaporization? | The change in state from a liquid to a gas. |
How does vaporization occur? | Particles in a liquid gain enough energy as the temperature increases that the particles can move independently and away from each other. |
What is an example of sublimation? | Dry ice changes directly from a solid to carbon dioxide gas |
If a solid element can hit it's melting point, become a liquid, remove the heat source and it returns to a solid, what do you know? | The freezing point and melting point are the same for the element |
What happens to thermal energy when a temperature increases? | Thermal energy increases |
What happens to thermal energy if the temperature decreases? | Thermal energy decreases |
What happens to ice if the thermal energy increases? | It melts |
A decreased temperature has what affect a basketball? | The particles inside the ball slow down and it loses pressure |
As temperature increases but pressure remains constant, what happens to the volume of a gas? | It increases |
True or false: gas pressure and volume are indirectly proportional. | False, they are proportional |
What is inverse proportionality? | When one variable increases the other variable decreases |
If temperature remains constant what happens to the volume of a gas when the pressure increases? | The volume decreases |
