What is naturalization? The process of becoming a U.S citizen
What is an alien? A non-citizen
What is an immigrant? Someone who moves to a new country and becomes a citizen
What is a democracy? Control of a group by the majority of its members
What is a representative democracy? A form of government where the people elect leaders to make laws on their behalf
Who is the author of most of The Declaration of Independence? Thomas Jefferson
What was Jefferson's concern about the government protecting our rights? That we were all born with certain inalienable freedoms and rights that should be protected
What is mercantilism? When a country sells more than it buys
What is Magna Carta? Great Charter
What are The Articles of Confederation? The first U.S Constitution ( first frame of government )
What is the US Constitution ratification process? It takes 9 states to ratify it.
What does the 5th amendment state? Protection from "double-jeopardy" + "The right to remain silent"
What were Anti-Federalists vs. Federalists beliefs? Federalists - wanted a strong government where power is divided between national and state Anti-Federalists - believed the Constitution gave too much power + wanted a Bill of Rights
What does the 1st amendment state? You have the rights of: freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of press, and freedom of assembly
What is suffrage? The right to vote
What is the Bill of Rights? The first 10 amendments
What did the 19th amendment do? It gave women the right to vote
What did the 13th amendment do? It abolished slavery in the US
What did the 14th amendment do? It granted citizenship and equal rights to African Americans and slaves after the Civil War
What are the 3 branches of government? Legislative, Executive, + Judicial
What is the term for the Senate and The House of Reps.? House of Reps. : 2 years Senate : 6 years
What does incumbent mean? The holder of an office or post
