TermDefinition
tribute (paying of) something brought to Tenochtitlan along with trade (gold, exotic bird feathers, gold, textiles, turquoise, obsidian, and cacao)
animism a belief system held by the Native Americans which involved believing that the natural world (the sun, wind, stones, and animals) were animated by spiritual forces
primogeniture a practice entailing a father in a patriarchal family, bestowing all his land on their eldest son; this practice left the younger children out in the cold
Reniassance a time period of great artistic and creative development in Italy
Crusades a series of battles between 1096-1291, where Christian armies fought to reverse the Muslim advances in Europe and to win back the Holy Land
Protestant Reformation a reform movement that began in 1517; caused by the critiques of Martin Luther and this reformation caused a major schism in the Catholic Church (this created the Protestant religion)
Martin Luther a German monk and professor; he wrote Ninety-five Theses, a book that condemned the Catholic Church for corrupt practices; his book caused the Protestant Reformation.
Christopher Columbus a Spanish mariner; he persuaded the king and queen of Spain to sponsor his journey to Asia in 1492; he arrived six weeks later in what he thought was Asia and dubbed his journey a success
Montezuma the ruler of the Tenochtitlan people in the Yucatan peninsula; he was captured by Cortez and his men in 1521
Matriarchy females govern the family- power was passed down from woman to woman; women were influential in local government (this is how many Native American families worked)
Patriarchy males govern the family- property and social identity is passed down in male family lines; controlled the lives of all the members of the family (wife + children) ; this is how the Europeans ran families
Republic states that have no monarch or prince but are instead governed by representatives of the people
heresy doctrines that were inconsistent with what was taught by the Church
predestination the idea preached by John Calvin that some people were born to be sent to heaven and all the rest were pre-determined to eternal damnation
Counter-Reformation caused by the Protestant Reformation; the counter-reformation sought changes within the Catholic Church- created new missionary and monastic orders like the Jesuits
Vasco da Gama a sailor who experimented with winds and currents, allowing his ships to voyage into the Atlantic Ocean
Hernan Cortez a Spanish explorer who led an expedition (600 men) to the Yucatan peninsula; they toppled the Aztec Empire in 1521
