Practical Exam 2
Gliding/Effleurage Techniques
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Dorsal effleurage of hand | Centripetal (shake hand Position); use outside hand, glide toward the side of the wrist |
Volar effleurage of the hand | Centripetal (shake hand Position); use inside hand, interlock thumbs |
Forearm effleurage of the arm | Centripetal; arm supinated, elbow anchored. Upper arm outside hip position, alternate hands, smooth firm gliding strokes. |
Circular effleurage of the arm | Centripetal; arm perpendicular to massage table, movement from wrist to shoulder, encircle arm then glide back. |
Effleurage of the foot | Centripetal; alternating hands from toes to ankle, covering the entire dorsum of foot. Move around lateral and medial malleolus. |
Circular effleurage of the foot | Centripetal; Make smooth circles, beginning distally, at toes, moving centripetal towards heel. Gently squeeze heel and glide back. |
Effleurage of the leg | Centripetal; Begin at ankle working to knee, working lower leg first with alternating hands, then move to upper leg from knee to hip with alternating hands for entire leg |
Cross-Fiber Effleurage of the leg | (movement is centripetal while moving lateral to medial back to lateral) In horse stance; begin at ankle, moving centripetal simultaneously lateral to medial, alternating hands. Continue techniques up to hip then glide back |
Effleurage of the chest | (caudad to cephalad)- Begin at shoulders down, sternum then out to rib cage and pull back up to axilla |
Draining the Lymphatics | Have client take a breathe in, then breathe out. On exhale, begin at sternum with hands in "Prayer" Position moving from medially to laterally towards the shoulders, staying below clavicle |
Effleurage of the back 1st (Caudad to Cephalad) | 1. Begin at base of neck (C7) hand over hand move down the spine down to sacrum then glide back. |
Effleurage of the back 2nd (Medial to Lateral) | 2. Begin at base of neck (C7) hands work simultaneously from medial to lateral, covering entire back, moving down back to sacrum then glide back |
Circular/Rotary Effleurage of the Trapezius | (medial to Lateral) flat hands upper fibers of trapezius apply circular movement from medial to lateral to acromioclavicular (AC) joint. |
Effleurage of Sacrospinalis | (Caudad) Begin at base of neck (C7) with therapist index and middle finger (phalanges 2 & 3) split with either finger lateral to spine and apply movement down side of spine to sacrum then glide back |
Cross-Fiber effleurage of the back (Combined medial to lateral while moving Caudad to Cephalad) | Stand at side of client, in horse stance, reach across back, pull hand back and forth from shoulder blades to hips, then return from hips back to shoulder blades |
Effleurage of hips (Cephalad, from Lateral to Medial) | Flat hands, make straight movements from greater trochanter to iliac crest, covering entire hip. Repeat other hips, with proper draping. |
Circular/Rotary effleurage of hips (Cephalad/Caudad Circular, from Lateral to Medial back to Lateral) | Use circular strokes with a flat hand from greater trochanter to iliac crest, while moving toward sacrum, returning to greater trochanter |
Effleurage of neck | Begin posterior to SCM, inferior to occipital hand glides down from occiput to AC joint, move caudad |
Effleurage of SCM | Stay posterior to SCM apply pressure from the mastoid to the sternoclavicular attachment; move caudad |
Effleurage of the Mandible | Hands move from midline of mandible upward to ears |
Effleurage of zygomaticus, buccinators and Masseter | Place fingers on each side of nose & move hands out towards ears following the cheekbones |
Caudad | Towards the tail or posterior end |
Cephalad | toward the head or anterior end of the body |
Lateral | away from the midline of the body |
Medial | toward the midline of the body |
Centripetal | Towards the heart |
Centrifugal | Away from the heart |
