Abstain Abstain from. I have to abstain from asking too many questions.
Apologise Apologise for. She hasn't apologised for breaking his heart yet.
Approve Approve of My parents never approved of drinking alcohol.
Be used Be used to. I'm used to waking up early in the morning.
Benefit Benefit from. Many thousands benefit from not working in Argentina.
Boast Boast about or of. Claudia always boasts about preparing the best salads in all the town. Claudia always boasts of having such intelligent daughters.
Come close Come close to. I was so mad I came close to hitting her
Compensate Compensate for. I took her swimming to compensate for having missed out on cinema.
Protest Protest against/at/about. Argentinians protest against paying more taxes. My daughter always protests at tiding up her bedroom. Tenants have been protesting about working in bad conditions
Speak Speak about/of. She spoke about going on holidays to Brazil the next summer. She spoke of arranging a new meeting with the committee.
Persevere Persevere in/with. He urged them to persevere in keeping the promises they had made. He did not persevere with learning to play the violin.
Accustomed Be accustomed to It takes awhile to accustomed yourself to working hard.
Believe Believe in. I believe in having a good health
Succeed Succeed in. The campaign has certainly succeeded in raising public awareness of the issue
Feel up Feel up to. After the accident she didn't feel up to driving.
Think Think about/of She thinks about going abroad because she wants to know other cultures. She thinks of having children with her husband.
Object Object to Two members of the committee objected to decreasing the production.
Aim Aim at. Our policies are aimed at encouraging economic growth
Keen Be keen on. She's keen on playing tennis.
Get used Get used to. I get used to studying hard
Take Take to. Michael has taken to getting up at 6 and going jogging.
Theorize Theorize on. Much of the Shakespeare seminar theorized on extending the hours of the seminar to work properly.
Fond Be fond of. My brother is fond of pointing out my mistakes.
Contribute Contribute to. Mr. Edwards contributed to donating ten new blackboards to the local school.
Concentrate Concentrate on. I must concentrate on doing a good work and achieving my goals.
Confess Confess to. I confess to eating too much chocolate.
Depend Depend on. I depend on winning the lottery
Dream Dream of/about. I dream of being a recognized translator. I dreamt about being in a heavenly beach.
Insist Insist on. She insisted on practicing all day to get the scholarship.
React React to. A Paris mob reacted to storming the Bastille
Rely Rely on. Don't rely on finding me here when you get back.
Be committed Be committed to. We are committed to withdrawing our troops by the end of the year.
Repent Repent of. He repents of missing his friend's birthday.
Fed Be fed up with I'm fed up with doing the same work every single day.
Talk Talk of/about
Delight Delight in. He seems to take great delight in sharing a moment with his son
Complain Complain of/about. She complained of reading the poem in front of her classmates. She complained about spending long hours in the queue.
Submit Submit to. Derek has agreed to submit to questioning.
Disapprove Disapprove of. My father strongly disapproved of drinking and driving
Allude Allude to. One member of the police alluded to seeing the videos.
Persist Persist on. You must persist on achieving your goals so that you will succeed.
Resort Resort to. He resorted to lying, since he wanted to avoid going to the jails.
Specialise Specialise in. I'm going to start to specialise in historic translation
Look forward Look forward to. I'm looking forward to finishing summarizing all the catenative verbs.
Cooperate Coopearte in. Spanish police cooperated with the British police in finding the terrorists.

Admire Admire somebody for I admire my father for being a good person
Apply Apply oneself to. I applied myself to becoming in a good translator.
Blame Blame somebody for. He blamed me for being in bedroom but I wasn't there.
Compliment Compliment somebody on. I complimented Mrs. Tomlinson on having such lovely sons
Congratulate Congratulate somebody on. All Martha's family congratulated her on graduating in English Teacher.
Criticise Criticise somebody for. Daisy and Maggie criticise her classmate for wearing the same trousers each day.
Dedicate Dedicate oneself to. The new president said she would dedicate herself to protecting the rights of the sick and the homeless.
Defend Defend somebody from She defended her son from being guilty about a murder
Despise Despise somebody for. Many people usually despise homeless for selling in the streets.
Devote Devote oneself to. She devoted her life to making her children happy.
Discourage Discourage somebody from. She meant to discourage her mother from smoking
Dissuade Dissuade somebody from. His friends tried to dissuade him from flying
Forgive Forgive somebody for. I forgave him for breaking my heart.
Justify Justify oneself for. I justified myself for arriving late.
Prevent Prevent somebody from. Monica prevented her children from getting sick
Pride Pride oneself to. She prided herself to being the top of her class.
Prosecute Prosecute somebody for. The lawyer was prosecuted for cheating an old man.
Protect Protect somebody/something from You didn't protect me from being stolen in the street.
Punish Punish somebody for. He was punished for committing a crime.
Reproach Reproach somebody for. She was reproached by collogues for leaking the story to the press.
Rescue Rescue somebody/something from Diego rescued a boy from drowning.
Reward Reward somebody for. Sally rewarded her daughter for passing all her exams.
Spend Spend (money/time) on She spent money on dancing ballet.
Stop Stop somebody from She stopped me from buying a new dress
