Chapter 10 vocabulary

lure (V) to persuade someone to do something, especially something wrong or dangerous, by making it seem attractive or exciting
irresistible (adj) so attractive, desirable etc that you cannot prevent yourself from wanting it
remote (adj) distant and isolated
conflicting (adj) ideas, beliefs, opinions etc that cannot exist together or both be true, opposite
unparalleled (adj) bigger, better, or worse than anything else
pollute (V) to make air, water, soil etc dangerously dirty and not suitable for people to use
contend (V) to argue or state that something is true
deprive (V) deny (a person or place) the possession or use of something.
exploitation (N) an attempt to get as much as you can out of a situation, sometimes unfairly, misuse
ban (N) an official order that prevents something from being used or done
inhospitable (adj) describes a place that is difficult to live or stay in because the weather conditions are unpleasant or there is no shelter
mere (adj) used to emphasize how small or unimportant something or someone is
vital (adj) extremely important and necessary for something to succeed or exist
teem (V) be full of or swarming with.
food chain (N) a series of organisms each dependent on the next as a source of food.
depletion (N) when an amount of something is greatly reduced or nearly all used up
dismissed (adj) to refuse to consider someone’s idea, opinion etc, because you think it is not serious, true, or important
come to a head (idiom) reach a crisis. become very important
treaty (N) a formal written agreement between two or more countries or governments
sovereignty (N) complete freedom and power to govern
handful (N) an amount that you can hold in your hand, a small amount
negotiate (V) to discuss something in order to reach an agreement, especially in business or politics
binding (adj) involving an obligation that cannot be broken.
