Chapter 9 vocabulary

nature (N) everything in the physical world that is not controlled by humans, such as wild plants and animals, earth and rocks, and the weather
universe (N) a world or an area of space that is different from the one we are in

centuries (N) periods of 100 years
a large scale (adj + N) involving large numbers or a large area; extensive.
considerable (adj ) fairly large, especially large enough to have an effect or be important
applications (N) the practical purpose for which a machine, idea etc can be used, or a situation when this is used
spinoff (N) an unexpected but useful result of something, that happens in addition to the intended result
buildup (N) an increase over a period of time
detect (V) to notice or discover something, especially something that is not easy to see, hear etc
toxic (adj) containing poison, or caused by poisonous substances
harmless (adj) unable or unlikely to hurt anyone or cause damage
hazard (N) something that may be dangerous, or cause accidents or problems
affordably (adv) cheap enough for most people to be able to purchase
remote (adj) far away, either in distance or time
scarce (adj) when there is not very much of something available
extensive (adj) containing or dealing with a lot of information and details
eliminate (V) to completely get rid of something that is unnecessary or unwanted
durable (adj) staying in good condition for a long time, even if used a lot
translucent (adj) not transparent, but clear enough to allow light to pass through
fatigue (N) very great tiredness
funding (N) money that is provided by an organization for a particular purpose
