1930s/Great Depress.

1930s and the Great Depression

QuestionAnswer
5 Causes of the Great Depression Consumer Overspending; Industrial Overproduction; Over-Speculation; Stock Market Crash of 1929; Under-Consumption
Describe any or all of these terms Consumer Overspending; Industrial Overproduction; Over-Speculation; Stock Market Crash of 1929; Under-Consumption
Stock Market Crash of 1929; What was it? What caused it? Wall Street crashed which caused the Great Depression. People bought stock 'on margin' (on credit) and 'over-speculated' (bought stock with the hopes of selling at a higher price). Also, people used credit to buy goods and ended up in massive debt
If people were expected to buy products in massive amounts, what do you think producers were doing? What would then be the result whenever people did not buy these goods? Making a great deal of goods (overproducing)/Companies then did not sell what was overproduced and they had to lay workers off as a result; People and businesses were now in debt.
Who was president during the start of the Great Depression and what was the overall opinion of this president? Herbert Hoover; Although he believed that the economy would recover soon, it did not. The American people did not feel that Hoover did enough to help the American people out of the Great Depression
"Hoovervilles" These were shacks or shanty towns that were given this (negative name) because it was believed that Herbert Hoover was the reason that Americans were in this predicament
The Dust Bowl Topsoil eroded, which led to massive dust storms/a problem with farming. This occurred because of poor farming practices and drought, resulting in there being a lack of crops.
"Okies" Negative term for migrants from the midwest farms that moved to the west to search for work (farms were now destroyed but 'we' need work)
Franklin D. Roosevelt; American's feeling towards him President that beat Herbert Hoover in the 1932 election; He was well-liked because of his New Deal Program which was used to help Americans out of the Great Depression
"New Deal" Roosevelt's Plan to help with Relief (for people out of work); Recovery (for business and the economy) and Reform (of the American economy) for those in the Great Depression
"Tennessee Valley Authority" (TVA) A New Deal Program which created many jobs; People were put to work to create hydroelectricity for rural Americans through the construction of dams.
"Civilian Conservation Corps" (CCC) A New Deal Program that created jobs for young men (flood control, reforestation, park creation, other projects)
Public Works Administration (PWA) A New Deal Program: Grant money was given to states to build roads, bridges, and dams (so states could employ people)
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) A New Deal Program: FDIC was created so people would have confidence in putting money into banks; insured people's money. Before this, people were worried about putting their money in banks because they did not want their money to be taken.
Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA) A New Deal Program: Paid farmers to NOT produce crops, so that overproduction did not happen (If overproduction happened, crops would be sold for too cheap. This would then impact farmers' wages).
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) A New Deal Program: this was created to regulate the Stock Market, so people could not engage in a great deal of stock speculation
Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA) A New Deal Program: Federal money was given to the state and local government so that they could operate soup kitchens/meet the needs of the homeless
Problem with the "New Deal" and the Solution? The New Deal did not fix the Great Depression, so Hoover developed the Second New Deal
Second New Deal Roosevelt's Plan to further combat the Great Depression: Included the Wagner Act, the Works Progress, Administration, and the Social Security Act
Wagner Act A Second New Deal Act-Strengthened labor unions in order to address workplace problems
Works Progress Administration (WPA) A Second New Deal group that constructed buildings and roads and created employment for artists
Social Security Act A Second New Deal act that provided government assistance to the elderly and disabled and gave unemployment benefits.
Thoughts about the New Deal/Did Everyone Support Them No, Liberals felt that FDR's New Deal programs did not do enough AND Conservatives felt that the New Deal Programs were too much like communism/socialism. Conservatives also believed that the government had too much power/this caused overspending
Huey Long nicknamed the Kingfish and ran against Roosevelt. He was popular with his "Share the Wealth" plan. However, he was assassinated.
"court packing bill" Roosevelt's plan to add six of his supporters in the Supreme Court, so his programs would be approved. This bill was dropped as there was a lot of criticism about it.
Eleanor Roosevelt very influential First Lady; FDR had polio, so Eleanor Roosevelt took on a very active role during the presidency. She helped with social conditions, traveled the country for causes, and changed the role of "First Ladies".
