common factor | a whole number that is a factor of two or more whole numbers greater than 0 |
composite number | a whole number with more than two factors |
denominator | the number below the bar in a fraction that tells how many equal parts are in the whole number or in the set |
equivalent fractions | fractions that represent or name the same number |
factor (of a number) | a number that divides into a whole number with a remainder |
fraction | a number that names part of a whole or part of a set |
greatest common factor (GCF) | the greatest whole number that is a common factor of two or more numbers |
multiple | the product of the given whole number and another whole number Example: 3 x 8 = 24; 24 is the third multiple of 8 |
numerator | the number of above the bar in a fraction that tells how many equal parts of the whole or parts of a set are being considered Example: 3/4 3 is the numerator |
prime number | a whole number greater than 1 with exactly two factors, 1 and itself |
simplest form of a fraction | a fraction in which 1 is the only common factor of the numerator and denominator |
skip counting | to count equal intervals by a number other than 1 Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, ... 3, 6, 9, 12, ... |
unit fraction | a fraction that has a numerator of 1 |
