common factor a whole number that is a factor of two or more whole numbers greater than 0
composite number a whole number with more than two factors
denominator the number below the bar in a fraction that tells how many equal parts are in the whole number or in the set
equivalent fractions fractions that represent or name the same number
factor (of a number) a number that divides into a whole number with a remainder
fraction a number that names part of a whole or part of a set
greatest common factor (GCF) the greatest whole number that is a common factor of two or more numbers
multiple the product of the given whole number and another whole number Example: 3 x 8 = 24; 24 is the third multiple of 8
numerator the number of above the bar in a fraction that tells how many equal parts of the whole or parts of a set are being considered Example: 3/4 3 is the numerator
prime number a whole number greater than 1 with exactly two factors, 1 and itself
simplest form of a fraction a fraction in which 1 is the only common factor of the numerator and denominator
skip counting to count equal intervals by a number other than 1 Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, ... 3, 6, 9, 12, ...
unit fraction a fraction that has a numerator of 1
