Socrates | Considered by many to be the founder of western philosophy; taught by asking questions; believed laws should be obeyed |
Plato | Student of Socrates; he founded the Academy, wrote the Republic |
Aristotle | Student of Plato; opened a school called the Lyceum; greatest scientist of the ancient world; wrote 170 books; tutored Alexander the Great |
Aesop | Legendary author of a collection of fables using animal characters that teach a moral lesson |
Herodotus | A historian who chronicled the Persian Wars, often called the “Father of History” |
Archimedes | He is considered one of the great mathematicians and scientists in history; made many discoveries both in math and physics, including many inventions. |
Hippocrates | A scientist of medicine, called the “Father of Western Medicine”; doctors still take his “Oath” today |
Pericles | Athenian general and politician, led Athens during the “Golden Age,” promoted education, art, culture, and democracy |
Pythagoras | A scientist and philosopher, he came up with the theorem a^2+b^2+c^2 |
