ELA 7 Poetry Vocab

Use these to learn poetry vocabulary for quiz and revising your poems

simile A figure of speech comparing two unlike things using like or as
hyperbole An exaggerated figure of speech not meant to be taken literally
metaphor A direct comparison between two things that does NOT use like or as
personification A type of metaphor in which human qualities are given to non-human things
assonance A repetition of vowel sounds in words that are close together
alliteration The repetition of beginning consonant sounds in two or more words next to each other
onomatopoeia A word which imitates the natural sound of a thing
rhyme Words that sound the same or similar in their endings​
rhythm The beat and pace of a poem​
stanza a group of lines forming the basic recurring metrical unit in a poem; a verse.
speaker someone who is the voice of the poem. Often, the speaker is the poet. ​
line break the end of the line of a poem and the beginning of a new line.​
mood the feeling the READER gets from the poem
tone the attitude of the SPEAKER
imagery Vivid description of how something looks, sounds, smells, tastes, or feels
