TermDefinition
When does complete cleft form? Before 9th week, growth is arrested
Complete Cleft Goes all the way into nose, includes lip, alveolus, hard palate, and velum
Incomplete Cleft Won't go all the way into nose
When does incomplete cleft form? 9th week
Bilateral cleft Clefted on both let and right sides of lip/nose
Incomplete cleft palate only posteriorly cleft (at incisive foramen and behind it)
Where does cleft palate occur? Median palatine suture because the palate only has one suture line, must split here
_______ cannot be differentiated with bilateral and unilateral palate
Other types of cleft Soft palate only, holoprosencephaly (no philtrum)
Primary palate Lip and alveolar process, complete or incomplete, bilateral or unilateral
Secondary palate Area posterior to incisive foramen (hard and soft palate), incomplete or complete
Submucous Cleft Mucous membrane is intact, cleft under mucosal layer
What may you see with sub mucous cleft? Bifid uvula, furrow along midline, zona pellucida, bony notch where posterior nasal spine should be, anterior insertion of elevator muscle, history od nasal regurgitation
What do you see when levator muscle anteriorly inserts? Notching
Microform cleft Partial or arrested form of cleft lip
Simonarr's band Strand of soft tissue in area of cleft
Prolabia Soft tissue only and no bones seen
What does it mean if premaxilla is out? There is bone seen in the cleft
Incidence of Cleft 1 in 595 births
