Term | Definition |
---|---|
System | An organized group of related objects or components |
Sub-System | A self-contained system within a larger system |
System Boundary | Identifying precisely which components are within your system versus which are part of the outside environment |
Parts or components | All the pieces needed to explain the phenomenon, problem, or process |
Inputs | The parts that enter the system from outside |
Outputs | The parts that leave the system |
Relationships | Shows how the parts work together to convert inputs into outputs |
Thermal Energy | Energy of moving particles (heat) |
Mechanical Energy | Energy of objects in motion |
Electrical Energy | Energy of particles moving through a wire |
Sound Energy | Energy that gives off sound waves |
Light Energy | Energy that gives off light waves |
Chemical Energy | Energy that is stored in fuel, food |
Elastic Energy | Energy that is stored in objects that are stretched |
Gravitational Energy | Energy stored in an object when it is above the Earth’s surface |
Reservoir | The natural and man-made places where water is found |
Water system | A series of reservoirs that are connected through the movement of water |
Precipitation | Water that falls to the ground in the form of rain, snow, sleet, etc. |
Surface water | Water located on the surface of the earth such as lakes and streams. |
Runoff | Water that drains over the surface of the earth after falling as precipitation |
Infiltration | When water drains down into the ground/soil |
Groundwater | Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock |
Groundwater movement | The movement of groundwater, which occurs very slowly |
Elevation | Height above or below a given location |
Watershed | An area of higher elevation land that dictates where surface water and groundwater drain |
Energy driver | The source of energy that causes water to move (for example gravity) |
Evaporation | The process that causes a liquid to turn into a gas |
Transpiration | The process that causes a liquid in plants to be released as a gas |
Molecule | A group of atoms held together by a bond |
State of Matter | Forms that matter can take on including solid, liquid, and gas |
Relative Spacing | How close together or far apart molecules/atoms are |
Kinetic Energy | Energy in motion |
Potential Energy | Stored energy |
Dissipated Energy | Energy that is given off by a system |
