Academic Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Anyalyze to break into smaller components for the purpose of study or examination
Antonym Context Clues use other words in the sentence that have the opposite meaning of the unfamiliar word
Base Word a word that can stand alone without a prefix and/or suffix
Connotative refers to the emotions (positive or negative) that are associated with words
Context the part of a text that surrounds a particular word or phrase used by a reader to create meaning,
Define a statement of the exact meaning of a word
Definition Context Clues define an unfamiliar word directly and clearly in the sentence in which the word appears
Determine to conclude or ascertain after reasoning
Figurative language that contains or uses figures of speech (e.g. simile, metaphor, personification, imagery, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and idioms)
Identify recognize and name
Impact to have a strong effect on someone or something
Inference Context Clues not directly stated in the text, but give hints to the meaning of an unfamiliar word
Meaning what is intended to be, or actually is, expressed or indicated
Phrase a sequence of words intended to have meaning
Prefix a word part added to the beginning of a root or base word
Root Word a word part to which a prefix and/or a suffix may be added to create a word
