isolationism a policy of avoiding political or military involvement with other countries
embargo a government order that stops merchant ships from leaving or entering a country’s ports
impressment the kidnapping of American sailors to work on British ships
neutrality a policy of not choosing sides in a war or dispute between countries
War of 1812 The second war between the United States and Great Britain.
War Hawks a member of the House of Representatives of the Twelfth Congress of the United States who advocated going to war against Great Britain in the War of 1812.
Francis Scott Key United States lawyer and poet who wrote a poem after witnessing the British attack on Baltimore during the War of 1812. The poem later became the Star Spangled Banner.
Battle of New Orleans The final battle of the War of 1812, made General Andrew Jackson a hero
Monroe Doctrine A political policy of the United States that states the Western Hemisphere is closed to European interference.
Nationalism a strong attachment to a particular country, or nation.
Foreign Policy guidelines for how a country handles political and economic interactions with other countries
doctrine a statement of official government policy, especially in foreign affairs
