Why was NJ different from any other colony? It had many kinds of people

What was the Underground Railroad? A system for helping slaves escape to freedom in the north
In the 1700's what country controlled colonial NJ? England
What was the town of Batsto in NJ known for? Iron-making
What made colonists angry with England? The colonists were taxed without any say, "taxation without representation"
Imagine you were a colonist who just arrived in NJ, describe your journey ship was cold, wet, uncomfortable, and crowded.
How long did it take to travel by ship to NJ The journey took 9-10 weeks.
What did the colonists bring with them on their journey? Only very important possessions could travel and they needed to bring animals, tools, seeds, utensils, spinning wheels and candle molds.
What were the colonists worried about on their journey? huge beasts, savage Indians, bad soil, and bad weather for farming
Why were the colonist joyous when they reached NJ? They found forests that were thick and green, clean rivers, kind Indians, and plenty of animals to hunt
What was it like to be a colonist? They had to work!
What did the women do for work? The women made clothing, soap, and candles
What did the men do for work? The men cleared the land, tended gardens, and took care of animals
What did the children do for work? The children gathered nuts and berries, fished, and hunted small game
What did the children do for fun? The children would take long hikes, ice skate, or ride sleds to have fun
What would the families do in the evening? The families would have dinner then gather by the fireplace by the fireplace to tell scary ghost stories
What did the families do on Sundays? The families went to church on Sundays, called the Lord's Day, they were in church several hours and they did not work on Sundays.
