Two events spell disaster for Athens 1. Disease= many Athenians including Pericles die bc of a plague 2. Athens makes a failed attempt to destroy the polis of Syracuse (a Spartan ally)
The significances of the Athenian loss: o Athens had lost its empire, power, and wealth o Confidence in democratic government. began to falter o One leader after another proved weak, corrupt, and disloyal
Why would philosophers start questioning traditional beliefs at this particular time in Athens history? Athens defeated by its rival Sparta would have caused its citizens to have spiritual doubts. This might lead them to consider radical ideas and make them more willing to question traditional attitudes
Philosophy the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law and justice.
Sophists were the first major thinking – they asked questions all the time even to random ppl in the market. They would question ppl’s unexamined beliefs and ideas about traditional values..they were look upon as annoying
Socrates believed that there was an absolute standard for justice (an ultimate truth) which the Sophists did NOT believe
Socratic Method a questioning process that one asks a lot of questions till the persons admits it (used in law school)
: what is the matter w living a life of perfect satisfaction and gratification based on illusion (day dreaming, drugs)? Socrates would say that behind every experience there is room for an interpretation of the meaning of that experience…after every day, we have the ability to reflect on the decisions that we made that day to correct our mistakes
Plato o Students of Socrates o Wrote the book called The Republic  A book that outlines his view of a perfect society which had 3 things: • Workers, warriors, and philosophers
philosopher king a person who is a great thinker to rule (monarchy)
Why was art banned in Plato's society? Bc its dangerous bc it can send the wrong message to kids
Aristotelian Method method of arguing according to the rules of logic:  1. Define the subject matter  2. Review generally accepted reviews  3. Present own arguments and solution
The Golden Mean the middle path (ex. If you tighten guitar strings too tight they won’t play. If you tighten them too lose they won’t play. If you tight them the golden mean they play perfectly
