Term | Definition |

Sonnet | 14 lines, abab cdcd efef gg, 3 quatrains and a couplet |
Ballad | Tells a story, 13 lines consisting of a couplet, ABAB or ABCB, usually sad or tragic |
Iambic pentameter | Five iambs to a line, eg "But soft!/ What light/ through yon/der win/dow breaks?" Another, from Richard III, is "A horse!/ A horse!/ My king/dom for/ a horse!" (The stressed syllables are in bold.) |
hyperbole | Figure of speech in an exaggerated way. |
Satire | Mocking a person or ideas in a funny way. |
Irony | Opposite of literal meaning |
Parody | Humorous piece of work to imitate the style of a famous person or idea often exaggerated. |
Bathos | Change of tone from a serious subject to ridiculous one. |
Pun | Has multiple meaning |
Caricature | Drawing or description exaggerating a persons appearance or behaviour in a humorous way. |
Innuendo | An indirect critical, unpleasant or disapproving reference. |
Sarcasm | Saying the opposite of something a joking way. |
Connation | Word that suggests, eg down means toward the ground, but also used to describe a person feeling down, as in Sarah is feeling down. |
Denotation | Literal meaning of a word. |
Simile | Comparison using "like" or "as" |
Metaphor | Comparison of two objects NOT using "like" or "as. |
Hyphen | Used to join words or parts of words. |
Dash | Longer than hyphen and used indicate a range or pause. |
Comma | Used to separate words, phrases, clauses or ideas. |
Ellipses | Omitting a word, phrase from a passage . Or to take out a less relevant part of the passage. |
