Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space; what everything is made of
State of Matter The different forms that matter can exist; the main three include solid, liquid, and gas
Solid A state of matter that has a definite shape and volume that will not change unless an outside force is used; the particles are tightly packed and vibrate
Liquid A state of matter that has a definite volume but its shape can change depending on the container; the particles move past each other at a medium speed
Gas A state of matter that can change in shape and volume depending on the container; the particles are moving at a fast speed and spread out
Freezing A phase transition/ change where a liquid turns into a solid when its temperature is lowered below its freezing point
Melting A phase transition/ change of a substance from a solid to a liquid when its temperature is risen above its freezing point
Condensation A phase transition/ change from the gas phase into the liquid phase when its temperature is lowered
Evaporation A phase transition/ change from the liquid phase to vapor when its temperature increases
Freezing Point The temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid; changes with different substances
