Organization and Definitions

Anatomical Position the body standing erect, face forward, arms at the sides, palms forward
Anatomy the science which studies the structure of an organism
Coronal or Frontal a lengthwise plane running from side to side dividing the body or any of it's parts into anterior and posterior sections
Homeostasis a stated of equilibrium in which the internal environment of the body remains relatively constant
Inferior or Caudal towards the foot end of the body, away form the head
Kinesiology the science that studies the movement of muscles
Lateral toward the side of the body, away form the midline
Medial Towards the midline of the body
Midsagittal a lengthwise plane running form front to back dividing the body or any of it's parts equally into right and left halves
Organs an organization of several different tissues so arranged that together they can perform a special function
Physiology the science that studies the function of an organism
Posterior or Dorsal toward the back of the body (in humans)
Proximal toward or nearest the trunk of the body or the point of reference
Sagittal a lengthwise plane running from the front to back dividing the body or any of it's parts into right and left sides
Superior or Cranial toward the head end of the body
Systems and organization of varying numbers and kinds of organs so arranged that together they perform complex functions for the body
Tissues and organization of a great many similar cells and varying amount and kinds or non living, intercellular substances between them
Transverse or Horizontal a crosswise plane dividing the body or any of it's parts into upper and lower sections
